The City of Austell maintains an independent Fire Department to provide a rapid response in case of fire or emergency for its 8,000 citizens and businesses. The Austell Fire and Emergency Services Department is noted for having one of the fastest response times in the state, and because of their commitment, the City of Austell has an Insurance Service Organization (ISO) rating of 3 which reduces insurance premiums for residential and business property.
The Austell Fire and Emergency Services Department has two separate locations. Station Number 1, located at 5890 Mulberry Street, has served the City since 1981 and Fire Station Number 2, located at 5300 Austell-Powder Springs Road, opened in July 2003. Station 1 houses an Advanced Life Support Engine and the Rescue Boat. Station 2 houses an Advanced Life Support Engine and an Aerial Apparatus. Each station is fully staffed and available for emergency response 24 hours each day, 7 days a week.
Fire Chief Brandon Merritt and Deputy Fire Chief Kenneth Strong direct the activities of 27 full-time and 17 part-time firefighters. The Department responds to approximately 1,500 calls each year, and approximately 70% of the calls are related to medical emergencies. In addition to providing Emergency Medical Services, our firefighters handle fire suppression, hazardous materials, heavy extrication, and search and rescue related emergencies.
The Department provides administrative services to the community. These services include fire education and prevention programs, reviewing construction plans, field fire/safety inspections, enforcing fire codes, department training programs as well as criminal investigation and prosecution related to suspected arson.
